Glutton's Square

The Objective

To select a location, either Orchard Road or Botanical Gardens and form my own design brief based on one of the chosen locations after conducting in depth research about the area.

The Brief
Many find Orchard Road “boring” due to the standard, repetitive malls plastered all around the area, and feel that Orchard Road is not a true representative of Singapore's rich culture. Orchard Road has been starting to lose it’s popularity and distinctiveness amongst many due to the increasingly repetitive chain businesses that many do not find unique to Singapore. The objective of 'Glutton's Square' is to give Orchard Road a sense of identity, and to make Orchard an area specially unique to Singapore, offering the public a uniquely Singaporean experience nowhere else can provide.

Glutton's Square
Glutton's Square was one of the most famous street dining areas in Singapore back in the 1970s. Located along a carpark, it was one of the few open air street dining areas in the country. It's location and broad selection of authentic, Singaporean cuisine made it incredibly popular and eccentric. What I aimed for while working on this assignment was to bring this uniquely Singaporean experience back into Orchard Road, amidst the rapid modernisation happening all around us.
